STOCK NOTES: ENGLISH ANTIQUE OPEN BOOKCASES

Description:  An English Antique Open Bookcase offers three or four shelves - usually adjustable with a frieze and/or pediment over the shelves. The flat top occasionally has a gallery or decoration.  Antiquedesks.net only stock smaller free-standing open bookcases.

Sizes:  Typically small English Antique Open Bookcases range in width from 35"" (91cm) moving in 6" increments up to 60" (153cm).  Very occasionally bookcases of 72" (183cm) will be stocked.  Depth can vary from 10" (25cm) up to 18" (46cm).

Woods: English Antique Open Bookcases were commonly made from Mahogany, Oak and Walnut. 

Ages:  Good examples of fine English Antique Open Bookcases can be found dating from the early part of the 19thC (early 1800's) (Georgian, William IV, Regency), through the Victorian period and into the early years of the 20thC (Edwardian, George V and George VI)

Configurations: English Antique Open Bookcases can be found in various configurations. Some have adjustable shelves others have fixed shelves at varying spacing. Occasionally the bookcase will have a drawer or cupboard at the bottom or top.  Varying degrees of decoration can be found

Prices:  Prices for good quality fully restored English Antique Open Bookcases start at around 600 and go up to 2,000, or more, for a high quality bookcase of excellent provenance.
