The hinged lid of the reading slope opens to reveal a well with stationery compartments. There are brass escutcheons to the original locks which secure the lid and the cupboard doors.

The process of opening the right hand cupboard door exposes a small pen tray which slides out from beneath the right hand side of the slope.

The front cupboard doors, the rear and both of the side elevations are panelled in figured walnut.
